This sake proudly features the "GI Yamagata" label, which signifies that its water source, the rice used, and the brewing techniques and microorganisms are all sourced from Yamagata Prefecture. ### About the Geographical Indication (GI) System

The GI system protects the names of regions as intellectual property, and there are many famous examples worldwide, like Bordeaux and Scotland. Yamagata Prefecture is the first local government unit in Japan to receive this honor! To earn the "GI Yamagata" certification, sake must be made using rice developed in Yamagata and local water, and it has to be brewed, stored, and bottled within the prefecture to carry this label for sale.
