Ardbeg Anthology: The Beithir's Tale, a 15-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from the iconic Ardbeg Distillery on Islay, Scotland, marks the triumphant finale to the distillery's experimental Anthology series, released in August 2025 and inspired by the serpentine folklore creature known as the Beithir. This non-chill-filtered expression, bottled at 46% ABV, showcases Ardbeg's mastery of peat-driven intensity through a bespoke maturation process: the whisky is initially aged in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in a custom "designer cask" crafted from a harmonious blend of American oak, French oak, and ex-sherry casks, designed to coil sweetness around the core smokiness without overpowering it. Distilled from malted barley with Ardbeg's signature high-phenol peat levels (around 50-55 ppm), it develops profound complexity over 15 years in Islay's maritime climate. The nose bursts with bold peat smoke intertwined with treacle, coffee grits, citrus zest, and spices, evolving into vanilla and smoked butter. On the palate, it reveals a rich, viscous texture with layers of molasses, coffee beans, currants, sweet lemon balm, and smoked mandarins, balanced by earthy peat and subtle oak. The finish is long and meandering, lingering with smoky sweetness and faint brine. Hailed for its innovative fusion of tradition and experimentation—earning the Spirit Gold Outstanding award with 98 points at the 2025 International Wine & Spirits Competition—this dram exemplifies Ardbeg's bold spirit, ideal for peat enthusiasts seeking depth and narrative in their whisky.
