Description
The Balvenie 16 Year Old French Oak is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Balvenie Distillery in Speyside, Scotland, part of its Cask Finishes Range. Launched in 2022, it marks the distillery’s first use of French oak casks from the Charentes region, previously used to hold Pineau des Charentes, for finishing—a milestone in its 130-year history.


Age and Maturation: Aged for 16 years in American oak casks, imparting rich vanilla and honey notes, followed by approximately nine months of finishing in French oak casks that once held Pineau des Charentes, a sweet fortified wine made from unfermented grape juice and Cognac brandy, adding unique fruit and spice layers.


Alcohol Strength: 47.6% ABV, non-chill filtered to preserve more flavor.



Nose: Fresh and balanced with delicate floral hints of lotus and geranium, blended with green apple peel, grassy freshness, rich honey, orange marmalade, grape skin, and a touch of sweet cinnamon and vanilla. With water, notes of apple Danish, malt, and demerara sugar emerge.



Palate: Light and lively with a crisp citrus acidity of lemon zest and grapefruit, paired with subtle sweet-spicy candied fruit and ginger. Dominant honey and vanilla intertwine with apricot, creamy pastries, and hints of white pepper or clove, offering a smooth, slightly viscous texture.



Finish: Medium-length, clean, and slightly dry with gentle oak, honeyed apple, and citrus lingering, alongside a warm trace of ginger.
