Bruichladdich Distillery, situated on the rugged shores of Loch Indaal on Scotland's Isle of Islay, was established in 1881 by the Harvey brothers—Barnett, William, and Robert. Designed as a cutting-edge Victorian-era facility, it featured innovative concrete construction and gravity-fed processes, setting it apart from traditional distilleries. The site thrived until the whisky industry's challenges led to its closure in 1994. In a remarkable revival in 2000, a consortium of investors, including wine merchant Mark Reynier, businessman Simon Coughlin, and legendary distiller Jim McEwan (formerly of Bowmore), purchased and reopened it. Their vision emphasized authenticity, rejecting modern shortcuts like chill-filtration and artificial coloring to preserve the whisky's natural character.
Under this new stewardship, Bruichladdich became synonymous with progressive traditionalism. It prioritizes terroir, sourcing 100% Scottish barley (much from Islay farms) and using local spring water from an ancient source. The distillery produces diverse styles: unpeated core expressions highlighting floral and fruity notes, heavily peated Port Charlotte evoking Islay's smoky heritage, and the world's most peated Octomore series. Sustainability is central—employing over 80 locals, supporting biodiversity through organic farming, and minimizing environmental impact. In 2012, French spirits giant Rémy Cointreau acquired it, yet Bruichladdich maintains its independent ethos, focusing on transparency with detailed bottling information and community engagement. This blend of heritage and innovation has earned it a cult following among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
Bruichladdich 12 Year Old, known as "The Laddie Twelve," represents a new core expression in the distillery's lineup, marking the first time the minimum age for their core range is set at 12 years. This unpeated single malt Scotch whisky is produced entirely on Islay, utilizing 100% Scottish barley, including contributions from local Islay farmers, and Islay spring water. The process emphasizes traceability from bottle to farm, with no artificial caramel coloring and non-chill filtration to retain natural flavors. Bottled at 46% ABV, it is a blend matured in a variety of casks: 46% first-fill bourbon barrels, 27% sherry casks (first, second, and third fill), 5% second-fill sherry hogsheads, and 22% second-fill French oak wine barrels. This new release, launched with Taiwan as the global premiere market, aligns with the theme "Not Your Classic Whisky," diverging from traditional peaty Islay styles to focus on fresh, fruit-forward profiles. Sustainability features include packaging with approximately 60% recycled glass, organic inks, and certified sustainable paper, reflecting the distillery's B Corp certification since 2020.
Tasting notes reveal a balanced and elegant character. On the nose, it presents sweet orchard fruits such as ripe pear, sweet apple, and peach, complemented by bright citrus peel, honey, and vanilla butter, with subtle marine influences and a finish of dried dark fruits and toasted oak. The palate offers a rich sherry influence with dark fruit notes, subtle spices, natural sweetness, and toasted oak providing an earthy balance, alongside fine fruit and floral tones. The finish is long and warming, with fading citrus sweetness giving way to gentle sea salt, warm oak spices, and lingering dried fruit. Compared to earlier discontinued versions, this new edition emphasizes broader cask diversity and sustainability, enhancing freshness and complexity.
