Description

Château Beychevelle 2022 is a premium red wine from the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, produced by the renowned Fourth Growth (4ème Grand Cru Classé, 1855 Classification) Château Beychevelle. Known as the “Versailles of Bordeaux” for its majestic château and exquisite gardens, this estate has a rich maritime heritage. The 2022 vintage showcases Saint-Julien’s classic elegance and power, earning high praise from critics and offering excellent aging potential for collectors and investors.

Estate Background

  • History: Château Beychevelle’s origins date back to 1446, with the château built in 1565 by the Foix-Candale family. In the early 17th century, it was owned by the first Duc d’Épernon, a French naval admiral. Ships passing the estate were required to lower their sails in respect (“Baisse Voile”), inspiring the name “Beychevelle.” The estate’s logo, a ship with a griffin prow, reflects its seafaring legacy.
  • Location: Situated in the southeastern part of Saint-Julien, near the Garonne River, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir. Its 250-hectare property includes 90 hectares of vineyards, planted on deep Garonne gravel soils that ensure excellent drainage and heat retention. Proximity to the Gironde Estuary moderates the climate, protecting vines from extreme weather.
  • Grape Varieties: The 2022 blend comprises 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, embodying Saint-Julien’s quintessential Médoc style. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, Merlot adds softness, and Petit Verdot enhances aroma and color.
  • Modern Facilities: A state-of-the-art winery, designed by architect Arnaud Boulain, employs cutting-edge technology to enhance winemaking precision. Since 2011, the estate has been co-owned by the Castel Group and Japan’s Suntory, with rigorous quality control.

2022 Vintage Overview

  • Climate and Harvest: Bordeaux 2022 saw a dry, cold winter, with frost in early April. Warm May weather spurred early flowering, while June brought thunderstorms and low rainfall, causing water stress. July was exceptionally hot, reaching 40°C, marking the driest month since 1960. Despite challenges, the estate achieved a yield of 36 hl/ha, with harvesting from September 12 to 29, ensuring optimal grape ripeness. Technical Director Romain Duclomb noted, “Our Cabernet Sauvignon was exceptional, and this is the best Merlot we’ve ever produced.”
  • Winemaking: Grapes underwent strict selection, with only the finest used. The wine aged for approximately 18 months in oak barrels (70% new), preserving fruit character while adding complex oak nuances. The final wine has an alcohol content of 14.08% and a pH of 3.85, aligning with the estate’s standards.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep, dark ruby with subtle black highlights, showcasing rich concentration.
  • Aroma: Intense yet refined, with notes of black cherry, blueberry, cassis, and violet, complemented by licorice, vanilla, and creamy new oak.
  • Palate: Fresh and elegant on entry, evolving into vibrant fruit and silky tannins. The mid-palate is satiny, with flavors of blackberry, red cherry, and blood orange, supported by a balanced structure. Fine tannins and bright acidity lead to a long finish with spice, rose petal, and mineral notes.
  • Aging Potential: Medium to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity, this wine has excellent aging potential. Suggested drinking window: 2027–2045, with peak enjoyment from 2030–2040.
