Château Calon-Ségur, located in Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, boasts a rich heritage dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, with wine production traced to the 12th century. The estate's name derives from Monseigneur de Calon, who owned it as early as 1147, making it one of the oldest properties in the Médoc region. During the Middle Ages, it was a stronghold of the Lords of Lesparre, passing through notable owners like Alain d'Albret, who gifted it to Jéhan de Lur in 1481, then to Pierre de Marsan and Jean de Gasq. By the 18th century, it gained prominence under Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur, known as the "Prince of Vines," who acquired it alongside Lafite, Latour, and Mouton. His famous declaration, "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon," immortalized the heart symbol on its label, a tradition since that era.
In 1825, part of the vineyard separated to form Château Montrose, a Second Growth, while Calon-Ségur was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, affirming its quality. The estate endured phylloxera and economic challenges in the 19th century but thrived under the Gasqueton family from the late 1800s through the 20th century, maintaining traditional winemaking. In 2012, it was sold to Suravenir, an insurance company, ushering in modernization with investments in vineyards and cellars while preserving its classic style. Spanning 55 hectares of gravelly soils ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends, Calon-Ségur produces elegant, age-worthy wines known for structure and finesse. Its history reflects Bordeaux's evolution, from medieval fort to a symbol of aristocratic viticulture, inspiring global acclaim. Château Calon-Ségur 2011 is a classic Saint-Estèphe red blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (around 53%), with Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (7%), and Petit Verdot (2%), reflecting the vintage's challenging yet rewarding conditions with early ripening and balanced structure. Bottled at 13% ABV, it showcases the estate's gravelly terroir, offering elegance and aging potential despite the uneven 2011 Bordeaux year marked by variable weather. This wine has matured gracefully, revealing layers of fruit and earthiness, ideal for decanting to enhance its aromas and soften tannins.

Palate: On the palate, it presents a full-bodied yet smooth texture with integrated, silky tannins that have softened over time. Juicy ripe cherries and blackberries dominate, balanced by subtle sweetness, good freshness, and earthy undertones. Black fruit, vanilla, and fines herbs unfold with cassis and black cherry, while the mid-palate shows sap and breadth, marked by some oak-derived structure but not overpowering. The wine is vibrant and healthy, with firm yet ripe tannins providing grip without austerity.
Finish: The finish is medium to long, with persistent blackberries, juicy freshness, and a touch of drying tannin that adds complexity. Echoes of spices, herbs, and black fruit linger elegantly, offering length and ageing potential for further evolution. It's clean and satisfying, with the tannins all resolved, making it approachable now.
