Glenallachie 13 Year Old Taiwan Exclusive Cuvee Cask Finish is a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at cask strength 55.2% ABV in a 70cl format, exclusively for the Taiwan market. This cuvee bottling, curated under Master Distiller Billy Walker's wood policy, begins with initial maturation in American oak ex-bourbon barrels to build a sweet, fruity foundation. It then receives a bespoke finish in a trio of casks: Oloroso sherry butts for nutty richness and dried fruits, Chinquapin (heavily toasted American oak) for spicy intensity and vanilla, and Virgin Oak for fresh wood notes and tannic structure. This combination creates a unique, layered expression that diverges from standard Speyside profiles, emphasizing bold cask influences without peat. Non-chill filtered and naturally colored, it preserves the whisky's oily texture and authenticity, highlighting Glenallachie's commitment to innovative maturation for market-specific releases.
Tasting notes showcase a complex, evolving profile. On the nose, citrus bursts with lemon peel and grapefruit, mingled with ginger, cardamom, dark chocolate infused with full fruitiness, cinnamon wisps, subtle rubbery friction, kaoliang-like fermented grains, Miyabi elegance, rum undertones, and holly freshness. The palate is rich and oily, opening with toffee, caramel pudding, raisins, and Manuka honey, transitioning to coffee, tobacco, and acidic raw pepper hints; citrus and grape fruits dominate with balanced sweet-sour juiciness, creamy wood, coffee, and holly adding depth, medium body with emerging astringency on chew, and lingering rum traces. The finish is long and warming, featuring black sugar and spices, thick oiliness with mild throat stimulation; it lingers on holly soda sugar, honey, spiced black tea, ginger, cardamom, mild astringency and numbness on throat and palate, with persistent sweetness. This version corrects the prior description by specifying Oloroso, Chinquapin, and Virgin Oak finishes, differing from wine cask influences in other cuvees, offering deeper sherry-driven complexity. Ideal neat or with water, it pairs with dark chocolate or spiced desserts.
