Glendronach Distillery was established in 1826 by James Allardice in Forgue, Aberdeenshire, Scotland's Highland region. Acquired by William Teacher & Sons in 1960, it was mothballed from 1996 to 2002, modernized in 2005 by switching to steam-heated stills as Scotland's last. Purchased by Benriach Company in 2008, reviving the core range, and by Brown-Forman in 2016. This expression was distilled on February 16, 1996, bottled in December 2013, from single PX Sherry Puncheon cask #1484, yielding 673 bottles, highlighting the distillery's sherry expertise.
This Glendronach 1996 17 Year Old Cask 1484 is a Highland single malt whisky, distilled on February 16, 1996, and bottled in December 2013, aged for 17 years in a single PX Sherry Puncheon (cask #1484). At 53.3% ABV, it is non-chill filtered, uncolored, cask strength, yielding 673 bottles, making it highly rare. It features a deep amber color; the nose is filled with pastry, orange, raisins, creamy fruits, vanilla, chocolate, fudge, leather, syrup, nuts, and cake baking mix. The palate is full and smooth, with layers of caramel, fruity notes, coffee, sticky pudding, spices, and forest fruits. The finish is long, carrying pepper, orange, raisins, forest fruits, plums, and dates, exemplifying PX sherry cask's rich depth and complex balance.
