L'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc 2022, the second white wine of Domaine de Chevalier, blends 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon from younger vines, offering a vibrant, accessible expression of Pessac-Léognan terroir with remarkable depth for its status. Nosing reveals a bright, inviting bouquet, opening with crisp citrus notes of lemon zest, grapefruit, and lime, intertwined with fresh green apple, pear, and subtle tropical hints of pineapple and passion fruit for an alluring freshness. Gentle floral undertones of white blossoms and acacia emerge, accented by mild spices like ginger and a touch of mineral flintiness, evoking a spring orchard with a saline sea breeze influence that adds crispness without austerity. The aroma is elegant and layered, with modest oak integration providing creamy vanilla edges. On the palate, it presents a medium to full-bodied texture that's fleshy yet precise, with bright acidity driving flavors of juicy white peach, green melon, and citrus pith, balanced by savory earthiness from the gravel soils. It unfolds with notes of honeysuckle, subtle herbal sage, and a creamy mouthfeel from lees aging, creating harmonious vibrancy that feels clean and pure, like a Grand Vin in disguise. The structure is excellent, with depth and minerality enhancing the fruit without heaviness. The finish is long and saline, lingering with echoes of citrus peel, white flowers, and faint spice, fading gracefully to a refreshing, mineral-driven crispness that invites another sip, leaving a sense of purity and lingering satisfaction. Overall, this vintage captures Bordeaux white elegance—vibrant, balanced, and endlessly approachable.
Domaine de Chevalier, nestled in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux's Graves region, traces its origins to the 17th century, when archives first mention the estate as "Domaine de Chivaley," a versatile property used for farming, forestry, and limited viticulture. The name "Chevalier," meaning "knight," evokes a sense of nobility tied to the land's historical ties to chivalric orders. Serious winemaking began in the mid-19th century under Arnaud Ricard, who expanded vineyards amid Bordeaux's phylloxera crisis and classification efforts. By 1865, the estate focused on quality grape cultivation, benefiting from gravelly soils and a microclimate moderated by surrounding pine forests, which protect vines from extremes. In 1948, Claude Ricard took over, modernizing facilities while preserving traditional methods like hand-harvesting. The pivotal shift occurred in 1983 when the Bernard family, led by Olivier Bernard, acquired the domaine from the Ricards. Olivier, from a spirits background, invested heavily in replanting, introducing sustainable practices, and emphasizing white wines, which comprise only 18 hectares of the 50-hectare vineyard. Under his stewardship, the estate earned global acclaim for its elegant, age-worthy reds and whites, often rivaling Premier Crus. Today, managed by Olivier and his sons, Adrien and Hugo, Domaine de Chevalier produces around 100,000 bottles annually, blending biodynamic elements with precision viticulture. Its history reflects Bordeaux's evolution from rustic estates to refined icons, rooted in terroir-driven philosophy that balances tradition with innovation, making it a benchmark for Graves whites amid climate challenges.
