Distillery Background

Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, The Macallan is one of Scotland’s earliest licensed distilleries, located on a 485-acre estate by the River Spey. Renowned for its mastery of oak casks, which contribute up to 80% of the whisky’s flavor, The Macallan meticulously selects Oloroso sherry-seasoned casks from Jerez, Spain, to create its signature rich, fruity profile. The Double Cask series combines the bold character of European oak with the sweet notes of American oak for a modern flavor expression.

Production and Maturation

The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask is distilled in unique “curiously small” copper pot stills, which increase copper contact, reducing sulfides and enhancing fruitiness. Matured for 12 years in American and European oak casks, both seasoned with Oloroso sherry, the American oak imparts sweet vanilla and citrus, while European oak adds rich dried fruit and spice. Bottled at 40% ABV, its color is 100% natural from the casks, with no additives.

Tasting Notes

The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask is a smooth, sweet, and approachable whisky, blending sherry cask depth with the light sweetness of American oak, ideal for both novices and seasoned drinkers:





Appearance: Golden to deep gold, with a clear, sunlit hay-like sheen and pronounced legs.



Nose: Sweet and balanced, offering toffee, vanilla, honey, candied orange peel, and banana, with dried fruits (raisins, apricots), cinnamon, and subtle oak spice.



Palate: Medium to light-bodied, silky, with creamy toffee, honey, banana, candied citrus, and red apple sweetness, complemented by European oak’s herbal and spicy notes (cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme).



Finish: Short to medium-long, with dried fruit, oak, caramel, and mild spice (black pepper, clove), leaving a sweet, warm, slightly dry oak finish.
