Distillery Background

Established in 1824 by Alexander Reid, The Macallan is one of Scotland’s earliest licensed distilleries, located on a 485-acre estate overlooking the River Spey in Speyside. The distillery is celebrated for its unparalleled mastery of wood and spirit, with oak casks contributing up to 80% of the whisky’s flavor. The Macallan sources, crafts, and seasons its casks under the meticulous oversight of its Master of Wood, with the Sherry Oak Collection showcasing European oak casks seasoned with Oloroso sherry from Jerez, Spain, to deliver exceptional richness and natural color.

Production and Maturation

The Macallan 18 Year Old Sherry Oak 2025 Release is distilled using the distillery’s signature “curiously small” copper pot stills, which enhance copper contact to produce a robust, fruity new make spirit. Matured for a minimum of 18 years in predominantly sherry-seasoned European oak casks from Jerez, this whisky develops a deep, complex character. Bottled at 43% ABV, it features a natural light mahogany color derived entirely from the casks, with no artificial additives. The 2025 release introduces a redesigned bottle and packaging by artist David Carson, featuring a modernized label and a bottle shape inspired by the distillery’s iconic roofline, complete with advanced anti-counterfeit technology and a QR code for detailed bottling information.

Appearance: Light mahogany with a warm, amber glow, reflecting the influence of sherry-seasoned European oak.



Nose: Rich and inviting, with aromas of treacle tart, stem ginger, soaked raisins, sultanas, and a hint of orange zest, complemented by ground cinnamon and subtle oak spice.



Palate: Soft and opulent, featuring dark chocolate-coated ginger, sticky dates, dried apricots, and raisins, balanced by mature oak, vanilla sweetness, and a touch of wood spice.



Finish: Long and lingering, with dried fruits, sweet honey, bitter chocolate, and a touch of espresso, accented by oak spice and zesty citrus.
