A vatting of sherry-finished and mezcal-cask-aged whiskies, this 17-year-old merges orchard fruit with smoky vegetal notes. Nosing is mild, aromatic with oriental spices, mezcal-like vegetation, raisins, mineral sulfur, and white fruit amid earthy base. The palate is creamy-smooth, sweet yet savory, with orchard fruits, peppery leather, mezcal smoke, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and honey—hybrid earthy and fruity. It's drying with subtle complexity. The finish is medium-long, lingering with smoke, spice, and faint fruit, fading to blue-hued warmth. This blue venture innovates Glen Ord's profile boldly.
Glen Ord Distillery, on the Black Isle near Muir of Ord, dates to 1838 when Thomas Mackenzie founded it on land granted to his family by King Alexander III in 1263. Initially a farm distillery, it grew with railway access. Sold in 1896 to Robert Pattison, it faced bankruptcy scandals but was acquired by John Dewar & Sons in 1923, then DCL in 1930, now Diageo. Expanded to three stills in 1968, it produces 11 million liters, much for blends and Asian markets as The Singleton. Known for malty, fruity style from long fermentation, its history blends medieval roots with modern global reach.
