Yoichi Distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru in Hokkaido, Japan, was Nikka Whisky's first site, chosen for its cool, humid climate resembling Scotland. Taketsuru, inspired by Scottish training at Longmorn and Hazelburn, married Rita Cowan and returned to pioneer Japanese whisky after leaving Suntory. Employing traditional coal-fired distillation, it produces bold, peated malts with sea breeze influences. Despite challenges like wartime halts, it resumed in 1945, emphasizing quality and innovation, blending heritage with modern expressions.
Yoichi NAS Single Malt is a non-age-statement whisky at 45% ABV, blending malts with subtle peat from coal-fired stills, offering balanced fruitiness and smokiness.
Nosing: Sweet citrus fruits like lemon and orange, honey, toasted nuts, vanilla, pears, white grapes, with hints of gentle peat smoke and sea salt.
Palate: Bold yet smooth, bursting with kumquat, pineapple, ripe berries, creamy vanilla, nutty undertones, and a light oily texture with mild spice.
Finish: Long and warming, lingering with subtle smoke, oak dryness, and satisfying fruity echoes.
