Distillery History:
Destilerías Campeny is on the Barcelona coast at El Masnou. Akori is its Japanese-inspired gin. The base is rice and cereal, not a classic wheat or barley neutral spirit. The bottle is deep blue with bamboo, an Asian cue. It is classified as distilled gin: juniper is required, then Asian fruit and spice.
Gin Introduction:
At 42%, botanicals include juniper, kumquat, dragon fruit and ginger. The house calls it Japanese-inspired; it is not distilled in Japan. The rice base is clean and less cereal-heavy. Versus a London Dry built on peel and coriander, dragon fruit and kumquat sit further forward, with ginger on the finish. Suited to gin and tonic, and workable in a martini. Numbered bottles exist; it is not a single cask.
Tasting Notes:
Nosing: Juniper, dragon fruit and kumquat.
Palate: Clean, citrus, smooth fruit.
Finish: Soft ginger.
