Château Pape Clément, in Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, is one of the oldest Grands Crus, with the first harvest in 1252. Vines were planted in 1300 by Bertrand de Goth, appointed Archbishop of Bordeaux, who became Pope Clement V in 1305, naming the estate after himself. It remained under archbishops until the French Revolution, when it was nationalized. Classified as a Cru Classé de Graves in 1959, it was acquired by Bernard Magrez in 1983, who modernized it while preserving its historic terroir for producing red and white wines.
The 2019 Château Pape Clément is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.Nosing: Stunning with crème de cassis, blackcurrants, blackberries, graphite, lead pencil, scorched earth, tobacco, violets, and dark chocolate.Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated, layered with ripe black fruits, plum, velvety tannins, and a fleshy, balanced texture.Finish: Long and expansive, with powdery tannins, lingering dark fruit, spice, and a subtle heady note.
