Château Cos d’Estournel is located in Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux. Founded in 1811 by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, famous for its unique pagoda-style architecture. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the estate was acquired by Michel Reybier in 2000, who introduced gravity-flow cellars while preserving tradition. It is renowned for powerful yet elegant Left Bank wines and stands as one of the finest in Saint-Estèphe.
The 2016 vintage is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, aged in 65-70% new French oak for about 15-18 months. Highly rated near-perfect scores (100 points from Parker and others), it offers purity, concentration, power and freshness with exceptional aging potential for decades – a modern classic from the estate.
Tasting NotesNosing: Intense and deep with pure cassis, blackberry, violets, gravelly minerality, tobacco leaf, Asian spices and pencil shavings, lifted by licorice and floral notes – elegant and seductive.Palate: Full-bodied with silky velvet tannins, concentrated black and red fruits, dark chocolate, coffee and mineral layers; fresh acidity, power and precision in perfect harmony, rich and balanced texture.Finish: Long, powerful and pure with lingering black fruit, spices, minerality and refined tannins; warm oak and silky aftertaste.
