The Cairn Distillery, nestled in the heart of Scotland's Speyside region, represents a significant milestone in the legacy of Gordon & MacPhail, a family-owned business with roots dating back to 1895. Founded by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail in Elgin, the company began as a modest grocery store specializing in teas, wines, and spirits. Over the decades, it evolved into one of Scotland's most respected independent bottlers, renowned for its vast collection of maturing whiskies and expertise in cask management. By the mid-20th century, Gordon & MacPhail had established itself as a pioneer in single malt whisky, releasing expressions from distilleries that were otherwise unavailable to the public.
In 1993, the family acquired the Benromach Distillery, marking their entry into whisky production. This success paved the way for a second distillery. Plans for The Cairn were announced in May 2018, with construction beginning shortly after in Craggan, near Grantown-on-Spey, within the Cairngorms National Park. The name "The Cairn" draws inspiration from the ancient stone markers dotting the Scottish landscape and the distillery's stunning location overlooking the Cairngorm Mountains, at approximately 57 degrees north latitude—a nod reflected in their CRN57 whisky range.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the distillery incorporates modern architecture that blends seamlessly with the natural environment, featuring energy-efficient systems and a visitor center to promote whisky tourism. A landmark moment came in September 2022 when the facility was handed over from contractors, officially opening its doors. Since then, The Cairn has focused on producing high-quality single malt whiskies, while the CRN57 series serves as blended malt previews of future releases. This venture underscores Gordon & MacPhail's commitment to innovation, heritage, and the art of whisky-making, bridging over 125 years of tradition with contemporary craftsmanship. Today, as a fourth-generation enterprise, it continues to inspire adventure seekers and whisky enthusiasts alike.
CRN57 Whisky Visions is a blended malt Scotch whisky from The Cairn Distillery, offering a vibrant and approachable expression that previews the house style. Bottled at 43% ABV without an age statement, it combines carefully selected malts to create a balanced profile ideal for both novices and connoisseurs. The whisky emphasizes fresh, fruity notes with subtle complexity, making it versatile for sipping neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails.
Nosing: On the nose, CRN57 Visions opens with an inviting burst of fresh fruits and creamy sweetness. Dominant aromas include ripe blueberries and green apples, intertwined with vanilla cream and a hint of lemon frosted cupcakes. Subtle floral undertones emerge, such as apple blossom and gooseberry, adding a light, herbaceous freshness. There's a gentle citrus edge, like candied peel and zesty orange, complemented by soft malt and a whisper of orchard fruits. This aromatic profile is bright and attractive, evoking a springtime garden with a touch of bakery sweetness, without any overpowering peat or smoke, allowing the natural vibrancy of the malts to shine through.
Palate: The palate delivers a smooth, medium-bodied experience with zesty citrus leading the way, transitioning into soft malt and juicy orchard fruits like apple and raspberry. Notes of vanilla and subtle spice, including a touch of aniseed and ground pepper, add depth without overwhelming the fruit-forward character. There's a creamy texture from hints of milk chocolate and banana, balanced by tangy figs and brazil nuts. The integration of flavors creates a harmonious sip that's lively yet refined, with the alcohol providing a gentle warmth that enhances the overall freshness.
Finish: The finish is medium-length and satisfying, lingering with vibrant citrus and spicy pepper that fades into sweet vanilla and soft fruit echoes. Residual notes of blueberry and apple persist, leaving a clean, refreshing aftertaste with a faint floral edge. It's not overly complex but ends on a positive, uplifting note, encouraging another sip.
