Producer History:Crystallum was founded in 2007 by brothers Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde region. Their father Peter was a pioneer of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at Bouchard Finlayson. Peter-Allan was named Tim Atkin’s South African Winemaker of the Year in 2021. The estate is a leading voice in the New Wave movement, focusing on natural fermentation, site expression and low-intervention winemaking.

Wine Introduction:Peter Max Pinot Noir is named after the original growers who supplied fruit for the first vintage; the name remains as a tribute even as sources have evolved into a multi-vineyard blend, primarily from Hemel-en-Aarde coastal sites plus higher inland vineyards. The 2025 vintage uses 50% whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts, minimal extraction and four weeks on skins, followed by ageing in French oak. It delivers a lively, precise expression of red fruit, spice and mineral freshness.

Tasting Notes:Nosing: Cranberry and pomegranate lead, followed by liquorice and Christmas spices.Palate: Generous and red-fruited with layers of blueberry and dark chocolate.Finish: Defined by wet-stone acidity, fresh and lingering.
