Distillery History:
Edradour was founded in 1825 in Pitlochry and was long known as one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries. Since Andrew Symington of Signatory Vintage acquired it in 2002, it has become famous for wine-cask experiments, alongside unpeated Edradour and peated Ballechin. Small pot stills give an oily, fruit-forward Highland style that takes red-wine wood particularly well.
Whisky Introduction:
This official small-batch release was distilled in 2007 and bottled at 18 years old. It is described as matured in Amarone casks—the Italian dried-grape red from Valpolicella, rich in dried fruit, black cherry and chocolate. Unlike Edradour’s Barolo 18 Year Old, which is declared as a bourbon maturation plus wine finish, this bottling is presented as Amarone-cask matured. At 46% it is a big, jammy dram of stewed berries, baking spice and dark cacao.
Tasting Notes:
Nosing: Stewed berries, raisins and red-wine spice, with cocoa and jammy sweetness.
Palate: Full and jammy, weaving red fruit, baking spice and dark cacao.
Finish: Medium-long, with dried-fruit sweetness, spice and a gentle tannic close.
