Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 - 750ml

Winery history:Il Poggione sits in Sant'Angelo in Colle, southwest Montalcino, Tuscany. Lavinio Franceschi bought the land in 1890 and planted Sangiovese; the Franceschi family, now in its fifth generation, still owns it. A founding member of the Brunello consortium in 1967, it is one of the appellation’s early estates. About 600 hectares in all, with roughly 140 under vine, and winemaking carried on by the Bindocci father and son.

Wine notes:This is the estate Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, 100% Sangiovese, hand-picked from estate vines at 150 to 450 metres. Fermentation uses a submerged cap, malolactic fermentation is in steel, then long aging in large French oak of 30 and 50 hl and further time in bottle. The 2018 Vigna Paganelli Riserva was not made, so fruit from that 1964 vineyard went into this wine. About 200,000 bottles.

Tasting notes:Nosing: ruby red, with red and black cherry, plum, spice, grilled herbs, leather and flint. Palate: medium to full, warm and balanced, bright acidity, fine rounded tannins, blackberry, orange peel and clove. Finish: long and savory, minerals and herbs fading slowly, with further aging potential.
