Distillery History:Lagavulin Distillery, founded in 1816 on the Isle of Islay, is often called the “King of Islay.” Renowned for its slow distillation and heavily peated malt, it produces rich, smoky single malts with maritime and medicinal character. Owned by Diageo, the 16 Year Old is the iconic expression, while the 8 Year Old offers a younger, more vibrant take on the style.

Whisky Introduction:Lagavulin 8 Year Old was first released in 2016 to mark the distillery’s 200th anniversary, inspired by Alfred Barnard’s 1880s description of an “exceptionally fine” eight-year-old. Bottled at 48% and matured in refill oak, it delivers more direct peat and fresher fruit than the 16 Year Old. Popular demand made it a permanent core expression.

Tasting Notes:Nosing: Soft and clean with fragrant tea-scented smoke, maritime notes, milk chocolate and lemon.Palate: Light yet full-on Lagavulin – sweet, smoky and warming, with charred notes, minty dark chocolate and salty baked potato skins.Finish: Clean, long and smoky with minted smoke and warming chocolate.
