Laphroaig Distillery was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on Islay's south coast, Scotland. Starting as part of a cattle farm, it emphasized whisky production using local peat and the Kilbride Stream. The Johnston family ran it until 1954, when it passed to Bessie Williamson, Scotland's first female distillery owner. Sold to Long John International in 1962, then Allied Domecq, it's owned by Beam Suntory since 2005. Renowned for heavily peated single malts, it earned a Royal Warrant from Prince Charles in 1994. In the early 20th century, Ian Hunter expanded the distillery and introduced bourbon barrels for maturation.
The Laphroaig 12 Year Old is an exclusive travel retail release launched in 2025, matured solely in hand-selected ex-bourbon American oak barrels for 12 years, bottled at 46% ABV. Non-chill filtered and naturally colored, it preserves the distillery's signature peaty character while offering a smoother, more refined profile compared to the core 10 Year Old.
The Laphroaig 12 Year Old is a peated Islay single malt Scotch whisky at 46% ABV, matured in oak casks.Nosing: Sea salt, seaweed, stewed green apple, heather honey with rhubarb tang; vanilla, crusty pastry, hazelnut, dried orange peel, ginger, lemongrass, and phenolic tarry peat embers.Palate: Carbolic soap with salt-encrusted seaweed, smouldering campfires, blackcurrant, stone fruit hints, thyme, liquorice root, aniseed, herbal thyme.Finish: Sweet and powerful, savoury notes leading to iodine and oily mackerel complexity.
