Distillery History:
Linkwood is in Elgin, Speyside, founded in 1821 by Peter Brown and rebuilt in 1874 by his son. In the 1930s it passed via John McEwan into DCL and is now Diageo, a major filling for Johnnie Walker and other blends. Linkwood B was added in 1971–72, taking the stillhouse from two stills to six; both plants ran into the mid-1980s. The label calls it the famous Morayshire distillery. This is pre-expansion style. Official single malt was then very scarce.
Whisky Introduction:
The usual label reads Over 12 Years Pure Linkwood Highland Malt Whisky, distilled and matured at the distillery. 70 proof, 26⅔ fl oz, level often in the neck. Not a single cask, and no cask type is stated. “Pure malt” was the period term for what is now single malt. Auction notes describe it as waxy, oily, fruity and floral, distilled before the site was modernised. The cork may have deteriorated; open with care.
Tasting Notes:
Nosing: Malt, green apple, white flowers and beeswax.
Palate: Oily—pear and honey, restrained oak.
Finish: Medium, floral, with a soft wax note.
