The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher, on the banks of the River Spey in Scotland's Speyside region. It was one of the first distilleries to be legally licensed following the 1823 Excise Act. Originally known as Elchies distillery, it was rebuilt in 1868 by James Stuart. In 1892, Roderick Kemp acquired the site, modernized facilities, boosted production, and renamed it Macallan-Glenlivet (the Glenlivet suffix was dropped in 1980). Emphasizing sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez, Spain, The Macallan has earned a global reputation for craftsmanship and luxurious single malt whiskies. Today, owned by Edrington, it continues to innovate while honoring its heritage.
Nosing: Rich sherry aromas with dried fruits like raisins, figs, and dates, warm spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, hints of orange, chocolate, and subtle oak.
Palate: Velvety and full-bodied, unfolding layers of fruitcake, prunes, stem ginger, vanilla, macadamia nuts, and cherries, balanced by gentle toasted oak.
Finish: Long and elegant, lingering with spiced orange, chocolate, dried fruits, and a soft echo of oak.
