Description

Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, known as the "Father of Japanese Whisky," represents a pioneering force in Japan's spirits industry. Born in 1894 into a sake-brewing family in Hiroshima, Taketsuru studied organic chemistry and traveled to Scotland in 1918 to learn Scotch whisky production at distilleries like Longmorn and Hazelburn. Returning in 1920, he joined Kotobukiya (later Suntory) and helped establish Japan's first whisky distillery, Yamazaki, in 1923, launching the country's inaugural whisky in 1929. Dreaming of his own venture, Taketsuru left in 1934 to found Dai Nippon Kaju Co. in Yoichi, Hokkaido, chosen for its climate resembling Scotland's—cool, humid, with access to peat and pure water. The first spirit was distilled that year, but the debut whisky, "Nikka Whisky," launched in 1940 amid wartime challenges. Post-war, the company renamed to Nikka Whisky in 1952, expanding with the Ben Nevis acquisition in Scotland (1989) and introducing innovative expressions.

In 1969, Taketsuru established the Miyagikyo Distillery in Miyagi Prefecture for a milder style, using Coffey stills imported from Scotland in the 1960s for grain whisky production. Despite Taketsuru's death in 1979, Nikka thrived, gaining global acclaim with awards like World Whisky Awards wins. Acquired by Asahi Breweries in 2001 (now Asahi Group Holdings), it blends tradition with modernity, producing over 20 million liters annually across sites. Nikka's success, inspired by Taketsuru's Scottish apprenticeship and his wife Rita's support, elevated Japanese whisky internationally, with Yoichi and Miyagikyo now popular tourist spots offering tours and tastings. This legacy continues to innovate, influencing a new generation of distillers worldwide.

Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is a distinctive Japanese grain whisky, distilled using rare Coffey stills imported from Scotland in the 1960s, primarily from corn and malted barley at the Miyagikyo Distillery. Bottled at 45% ABV, this non-age-statement expression emphasizes sweetness and smoothness, blending bourbon-like characteristics with exotic fruit notes, making it versatile for sipping or cocktails. Its production in continuous column stills yields a lighter, sweeter profile compared to traditional pot-still malts, showcasing Nikka's innovative approach to grain whisky. Often praised for its approachable yet complex nature, it's a gateway for bourbon enthusiasts exploring Japanese whiskies.

Nosing: The nose is inviting and sweet, dominated by bourbon-inspired vanilla, corn, and caramel, with a dusty grain aroma and hints of chamomile or herbal freshness. Fruity elements emerge, including melon, grapefruit, papaya, mango, and candied orange peel, intertwined with coconut, woody varnish, and light oak. Subtle spices like cinnamon and a touch of mint add vibrancy, creating a tropical, buttery bouquet that's soft and enticing without overwhelming peat or smoke.

Palate: On the palate, it's rich and chewy, with a buttery sweetness of vanilla, caramel, and toffee unfolding into layers of ripe fruits—apples, apricots, dried fruits, banana bread, and corn syrup. Spicy notes of white pepper, cinnamon, and coffee mingle with creamy elements like milk chocolate and caramel flan, balanced by a moderate heat and subtle oak. The mouthfeel is smooth and full-bodied, with sweet corn and grain providing a bourbon-esque backbone, evolving into a harmonious blend that's fruity yet not overly sweet.

Finish: The finish is medium-long and satisfying, with lingering sweetness from caramel and fruits fading into gentle spice and a touch of drying oak. Echoes of vanilla, corn, and subtle bitterness persist, leaving a clean, warming aftertaste that's refined and inviting for another sip.
