Winery HistoryPenfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Penfold in South Australia, starting with medicinal wines. Legendary winemaker Max Schubert launched Grange in 1951, revolutionising Australian fine wine. Bin 389 was first made in 1960 as part of Schubert’s Grange experiments and is known as “Baby Grange” because portions are matured in the same American oak barrels used for the previous vintage of Grange. It showcases Penfolds’ multi-district blending and balance of fruit and oak, becoming one of Australia’s most beloved Cabernet Shiraz classics.
A classic Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, the 2023 vintage is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz from multiple South Australian regions including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Matured for 14 months in American oak hogsheads (33% new), it combines Cabernet structure with Shiraz richness, continuing the “Baby Grange” tradition. Not a special edition but an excellent vintage expression.
