This 14-year-old expression, finished in American oak casks toasted with volcanic rocks from Skye, amplifies Talisker's classic maritime smokiness with added warmth. Nosing reveals a mellow yet forward aroma, dry with light prickle and mineral top notes, evolving into fruitier hints like barbecued pineapple, vanilla, and bonfire smoke, accented by liquorice roots and subtle peppery heat. There's a touch of chocolate and gentle oceanic elements, evoking the sea's spray. On the palate, it offers a velvety mouthfeel, starting with a dash of smoke, creamy vanilla, and herbal sweetness, building to spicy oak, salty maritime notes, white fruit, meringue, and balsamic hints. The texture is rich and warming, balancing sweet pastry cream with prickly spice and subtle melon candy. The finish is quite long and spicy, lingering with sweet herbal smoke, sea salt, and smouldering embers, leaving echoes of oak spice and a faint volcanic warmth. Overall, it captures Talisker's essence—peppery peat meets innovative toasting for a bold, layered profile that's both familiar and daring.
Talisker Distillery, located on the rugged Isle of Skye in Scotland, was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. They leased land from Clan MacLeod and constructed the distillery near Carbost, overlooking Loch Harport, drawing water from nearby springs. As one of the earliest licensed distilleries post the 1823 Excise Act, it capitalized on the shift from illicit production. In 1880, Roderick Kemp and Alexander Grigor Allan acquired it, expanding operations. By 1898, it merged with Dailuaine to form Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Co., later absorbed by Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925, which evolved into Diageo. Talisker endured challenges like a 1960 fire that destroyed its stillhouse, rebuilt faithfully to preserve its character. Known for its maritime influence, the distillery's coastal location imparts a signature peppery, smoky profile. It was a pioneer in using worm tubs for condensation, enhancing complexity. During World War II, production halted, but post-war revival solidified its status. Today, Talisker remains Skye's only distillery, producing around 2 million liters annually, blending tradition with innovation in peated malts. Its history reflects resilience amid Scotland's whisky evolution, from family enterprise to global icon.
