This 13-year-old single malt, bottled at 48% ABV with natural color and non-chill filtration, matures in a harmonious blend of Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso sherry, and virgin oak casks, delivering a rich, multi-layered profile that celebrates the fiery spirit of the Horse with sweet depth and spicy warmth. Nosing unveils a vibrant, inviting aroma, starting with bright orange zest cutting through rich mocha and warmed molasses for a caramelized allure. Subtle butterscotch sweetness follows, intertwined with decadent cocoa and cinnamon sticks, evoking a festive bakery with hints of nutmeg, vanilla pod, and faint floral heather, adding complexity while maintaining citrus freshness that tempers the sherry richness. The bouquet is balanced and enticing, promising indulgence without heaviness. On the palate, it offers a medium to full-bodied, velvety texture with waves of toasted almonds and honeycomb sweetness, bursting into juicy maraschino cherries for a tangy fruitiness. It evolves with candied ginger spice, evoking Black Forest gâteau through dark chocolate and cherry notes, accented by baking spices like clove and allspice, and vibrant blood orange zest for lively acidity. The sherry casks impart dried fruits and nuttiness, harmonizing with virgin oak's vanilla and subtle toast, creating opulent yet refined layers that feel pure and integrated. The finish is long and warming, lingering with echoes of heather honey, treacle sweetness, and dark chocolate, fading to spicy embers of cinnamon and ginger with a faint smoky oak undertone and refreshing citrus peel, leaving a satisfying, persistent glow that invites reflection. Overall, this edition embodies bold harmony—fruity, sherried, and endlessly sippable for celebratory occasions.
GlenAllachie Distillery, nestled in Aberlour within Scotland's Speyside region, was established in 1967 by Mackinlay McPherson Ltd., a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries, amid the 1960s whisky boom fueled by rising global demand. Designed by renowned architect William Delmé-Evans, it featured a modern, efficient layout with two onion-shaped stills, expanded to four in 1968, capable of producing up to 4 million liters annually. Its light, fruity spirit was primarily destined for blends like Clan Campbell, with minimal single malt bottlings. Economic downturns led to its acquisition and mothballing by Invergordon Distillers in 1985 due to industry oversupply. Pernod Ricard purchased it in 1989, restarting operations but facing another brief closure in 1998 before resuming in 2005 under limited production. For decades, GlenAllachie operated quietly as a blending component, its potential untapped. A pivotal revival occurred in 2017 when whisky veterans Billy Walker, Trisha Savage, and Graham Stevenson acquired it for £7.5 million, founding The GlenAllachie Distillers Company—one of Scotland's few independent, fully Scottish-owned outfits. Walker, celebrated for transforming BenRiach and Glendronach, reduced output to 800,000 liters for quality focus, invested in on-site warehousing for over 50,000 casks, and launched a core single malt range in 2018. Emphasizing innovative wood policies with sherry, virgin oak, and wine casks, it now produces acclaimed age-stated expressions and limited editions. Its history mirrors Speyside's industrial cycles and indie renaissance, from mass-production obscurity to award-winning premium status, including World Whisky of the Year for its 10 Year Old Cask Strength in 2021, captivating global enthusiasts with bold, flavorful innovations.
